Rio Abajo Community Library

The Rio Abajo Community Library (RACL) is owned and operated by the volunteers and donations from the farmers, ranchers and families of the Rio Abajo community.  This northern Socorro County community is made up of approximately 5,800 people and includes the New Mexico villages of:

  • Abeyta
  • Ladron Foothills
  • Bernardo
  • Las Nutrias
  • Blue Springs
  • Sabinal
  • Bosquesito
  • San Juan
  • Contreras
  • Tierra Grande, and
  • Jarales
  • Veguita
  • La Joya

Our work includes cooperative activities with the Northern Socorro Senior Center in Veguita, the La Joya Community Development Association, La Promesa Elementary School, the Socorro Public Library, the Belen Public Library, the Veguita Volunteer Fire Department, the Abeyta Volunteer Fire Department, and various religious organizations.

We survived the pandemic, but barely.  Many of our volunteers are no longer available, we are still recovering from structural issues (flooding from plumbing mishap which caused all manner of issues), losing our primary financial support.  Nonetheless, with typical New Mexican grit, we are back on a limited basis and working to grow and expand!  Our open hours at the present  are:
                                            Tuesdays -- 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (computer & smartphone classes)

                                                              Wednesdays -- 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

We welcome everyone, whether it's to use the computers, check out a book, have a cup a tea, or just visit!  Stop by our new site often as our calendar is due for some major "fun" additions
